THE PAINTING PROCESS

Each painting begins with a unique gem.

Angie paints only real-life gems.
The paintings of Angie Crabtree are elaborate portraits of diamonds and gems at 1,000+ times their original size.

First, each diamond, or gem, is hand sketched & painted using reference photos, directly onto a custom built panel or canvas.

Her originals take 3 – 6 months to complete, and are sometimes offered to the public as prints.

Each painting takes from 100 hours to 300 hours to complete.

Each painting is unique.
After applying the base coat, Angie paints each facet one by one, in multiple layers. Each layer takes 1-2 weeks to dry.

Clients are given in-progress photos to help understand the process of capturing a diamond’s beauty, colors, and light refraction down to the smallest detail.

Each facet is blended with handmade oil paints.

The sparkle is a painting technique.
To ensure the portrait’s accuracy, Angie analyzes the brilliance, reflections, and colors of the stone. She works with a color palette that combines both her own vision for the gem and the client’s. Her painting technique creates the illusion of sparkle, similar to the real thing.
